Data Sheet Dr Dross Dross Reducing Powder SPECIALITY CHEMICALS |
||||
| To reduce solder oxides, commonly known as dross, on wave-soldering machines and still pots, there are many dross-reducing materials available. Most of these are based on mineral oils and fatty acid compounds that breakdown and get deposited on to the PCB assemblies. SMT's specialty chemical powder, Dr Dross is formulated and designed to be a stable, low-fuming, high melting compound with no flash or fire point. No smoke or fumes are generated when solder Pot temperatures are below 252°C (485°F). | ||||
| Application Procedures | ||||
| The following procedure should be performed periodically to
reduce solder costs. Dr Dross can be used whenever there is excess of dross
that hinders the soldering process, or when a yellowish surface (tin oxide)
is seen on the molten solder. |
||||
| 1. | Solder pot temperature set between 232 and 252°C (450 and 485°F). | |||
| 2. | Cover the molten solder surface with about 1/8 inch (1.25 mm) of Dr Dross by sprinkling it over the surface. | |||
| 3. |
Gently stir the surface of the molten solder using a scoop or spatula that will not contaminate the solder. | |||
| 4. | The process will take several seconds to complete. Dr Dross will move about the surface of the molten solder and react with all the tin & lead oxides, converting them back into their metallic state. | |||
| 5. | On completion of the dross conversion process, Remove all remaining dross, dirt and other contaminants with the scoop or spatula. | |||
